The off-ramp to abundance. A project just starting, so people can see what they can look forward to.
Preview to the Future
Fear sells. But fear is not a plan. This page previews where AI can take humanity if we choose right. Every item links to its source. Items are labeled Today (already real), Near (in trials), or Prediction (someone’s forecast, not a fact). Check them yourself.
Already delivered: see AI for a Better World. Real people already on the road: Instances of real people on the off-ramp.
Health and medicine
- Today: MIT researchers used deep learning to identify a new antibiotic, halicin, effective against drug-resistant bacteria in mouse studies. (MIT News, 2020)
- Today: Tempus: AI links tumor genetics to outcomes to match cancer patients with treatments and trials. (Tempus)
- Today: Insilico Medicine: its AI-discovered drug rentosertib for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis showed a positive phase 2a result (Nature Medicine, June 2025). (Nature Medicine, 2025)
- Today: Alzheimer’s early detection: AI on scans, blood markers and speech aims to catch Alzheimer’s years earlier. (National Institute on Aging)
- Near: A paralyzed man, Noland Arbaugh, controls a computer cursor with his thoughts through Neuralink’s experimental implant, and plays chess and video games. (BBC)
- Prediction: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei guesses AI could give us “the next 50-100 years of biological progress in 5-10 years.” (Machines of Loving Grace)
Work and prosperity
“The purpose of a radiologist is to diagnose disease, not to study the image.”
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA CEO, on why radiologist numbers grew after AI arrived (CNBC)
- Today: Despite 2016 predictions that AI would replace radiologists, Huang says their numbers have grown; the American College of Radiology projects up to 40% growth in U.S. radiologists from 2023 to 2055. (CNBC). Not everyone agrees AI is the cause: radiologist Ben White argues the demand comes from a long-running shortage. (Ben White)
- Prediction: Elon Musk: “I think it’s actually going to be universal high income, where anyone can have any goods or services that they want.” (Saudi-US Investment Forum, 2025, video) He names the risk in the same breath: get it wrong and you get a “Terminator” future.
Energy
- Today (research): Google DeepMind and EPFL used AI to control the super-hot plasma inside a fusion reactor (tokamak), a step toward clean fusion power. (Nature, 2022)
- More: Data Centers and Power and Nuclear power.
Education
- Today: In a Harvard randomized trial, physics students using an AI tutor learned more than twice as much as in an active-learning class, in less time. Caveat: two topics, short-term results. (Scientific Reports, 2025)
- Today: Waterford UPSTART: among low-income kids, 68% vs 50% reached solid literacy and 85% vs 74% numeracy by the end of kindergarten. (Evaluation and Training Institute, 2024)
- Today: Khanmigo: Khan Academy’s nonprofit AI tutor guides students to reason instead of handing out answers. (Khanmigo)
- Start free today: Several Free AI Plans Available.
Science and longevity
- Today: The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went partly to the creators of AlphaFold, an AI that predicted the structure of virtually all 200 million known proteins, used by over two million people in 190 countries. (NobelPrize.org)
- Prediction: Amodei calls this the possible “compressed 21st century”: a century of biology and medicine progress in a few years after powerful AI arrives. He admits it “will almost certainly prove wrong in the details.” (source)
Liberty and ownership
- Today: AlphaFold’s code and predictions are open to anyone, so a lab anywhere can use them. Tools held by many people beat tools held by a few. (NobelPrize.org)
- Ownership paths and learning: AI Opportunities.
What could go wrong: the fork
- Concentrated power. If a few control the tool, abundance flows to a few. If many people can use and check it, it flows to many.
- Hype. Predictions above are forecasts by people with a stake in AI. Treat them as possibilities, not promises.
- Device risk. Arbaugh’s implant partly disconnected at one point and he lost control for a time. (BBC)
